Filter Media

Abstract

Filter media refers to the material used in filtration systems to separate solids from liquids or gases. It is an integral component that determines the efficiency and effectiveness of the filtration process. Filter media can be made from various materials, including natural substances like sand, gravel, or fibers, as well as synthetic materials such as textiles, membranes, or activated carbon.
The choice of filter media depends on the specific application and the particles or contaminants that need to be removed. Each type of filter media has its own characteristics, including particle retention size, flow rate, porosity, and chemical compatibility.
Common types of filter media include:
- Sand: Sand is often used as a granular filter media in water treatment applications. It effectively removes larger particles and provides a barrier for biological growth. Sand filters are commonly used in swimming pools, water purification plants, and industrial processes.
- Activated Carbon: Activated carbon is a highly porous material with a large surface area, making it effective in adsorbing organic compounds, chemicals, and odors from liquids or gases. It is commonly used in water and air purification systems, as well as in gas masks and respirators.
- Pleated Filters: Pleated filters consist of a folded or pleated sheet of filter media, typically made from synthetic fibers. They offer a large filtration surface area and can capture a wide range of particle sizes. Pleated filters are commonly used in HVAC systems, air purifiers, and industrial applications.
- Membranes: Membrane filters are thin, porous sheets that can retain particles based on their size. They are commonly used in applications requiring high levels of filtration, such as pharmaceutical production, food and beverage processing, and laboratory testing.
- Ceramic Filters: Ceramic filters are made from porous ceramic materials that effectively remove bacteria, protozoa, and other pathogens from water. They are often used in portable water filtration systems and in areas where access to clean drinking water is limited.
- Fibrous Filters: Fibrous filter media, such as fiberglass or synthetic fibers, are widely used in HVAC systems and industrial applications. They can capture particles of various sizes and provide a balance between filtration efficiency and airflow.
- Proper selection, maintenance, and replacement of filter media are crucial for optimal filtration performance. Regular cleaning or replacement of the filter media is necessary to prevent clogging and maintain filtration efficiency.

1. 필터란

필터는 유체 속에 포함된 고형물을 제거하는 거름종이와 같은 다공성(多孔性)의 장치(여과기)를 말하며, 수처리용 필터는 Water Filter라 부르며 생활용수나 공업용수 중에 포함된 이물질이나 유해물질을 걸러내어 깨끗한 물을 얻는 데 사용한다. 해수담수화 등의 수처리 분야에서는 마이크로필터 또는 카트리지 필터로 칭하기도 한다.

2. 필터 원리(filtering Mechanism)

여과 메카니즘은 분리기술(Seperation technology)의 일종으로 불순물을 함유하고 있는 유체를 스폰지와 같이 기공을 가지고 있는 필터에 통과시키면 체거름 현상으로 불순물은 걸리고 깨끗한 유체만 통과시키는 원리이다.
적용분야는 일반적으로 산업용 및 가정용 정수기, 해수담수화 등에서 멤브레인에 투입되는 용수의 전처리 등에 적용되고 있다.

1) Depth Filter

(1) 제작원리

Melt-Blwon 방식을 적용하며 일반적으로 필터로 화학접착제를 사용하지 않고 열처리 용착방법을 사용하여 결합되어 기밀이 확실하고 안전성이 높다.
※ Melt-Blwon 생산 방식은 폴리프로필렌과 같은 열가소성수지를 필라멘트 섬유로 제조할 때 고압의 공기로 필라멘트에 충격을 주어 섬유를 랜덤하게 웨브를 형성시키는 방법으로 제조하는 형식임.

- 여과 media에 무질서한 기공구조를 가지고 있다. - 기본원리는 일정한 두께를 가진 격자를 통한 기계적 입자제거와 흡착입니다. - Depth filter는 많은양의 이물질 제거에 사용되며 Membrane filter보다 가격이 상당히 저렴합니다.	- 여과 media에 기하학적 일정한 기공구조를 가지고 있습니다. - 입자들은 크기에 의해 filter 표면에서 Filter pore size보다 큰 모든 입자들이나 유기물들은 제거됩니다 - Membrane filter는 낮은 vlume의 cake 여과에 적당합니다.

2) Wound Filter

(1) 제작원리

가장 오래된 형식으로 Plyprpylene 또는 Cottn 재질의 실을 나선형으로 감아서 만든 필터로 원수 탁도가 높은 겨우 다소 유리하다.

3) Pleated Filter

(1) 제작원리

Pleated Type 필터는 여과면적을 극대화하기 위하여 가지도록 Pleated(주름) 형식의 필터를 케이스에 넣은 형식의 필터로 유량과 압력손실 면에서 그 성능이 우수하며 열을 이용한 접합 방식으로 구조적 안정성을 가진다.

5) Capsule Filter

(1) 특징 : Husing 없이 사용 할 수 있도록 연결구가 있는 캡슐 속에 연속적인 Pleated(주름) 구조의 여재가 채워진 필터이다.

6. Nominal Rating 와 Absolute Rating Filter 비교

1) Nminal Rating Filter

① 특징 : 필터 업체에 의하여 정해진 등급, 중량 퍼센트를 기준으로 표시한 여과 등급으로 필터의 기공보다 큰 입자가 통과할 가능성이 있다.

2) Absolute Rating Filter

② 특징 : 특정 조건하에서 통과하는 최대 입자의 직경, 즉 최대 기공크기가 엄격하게 정하여진 필터로 기공보다 큰 입자가 통과하지 않는 등급의 필터이다.

7. Water Bag Filter

워터 백필터는 유체 속에 포함된 고형물을 제거하는 거름종이와 같은 다공성(多孔性)의 장치(여과기)를 말하며, 수처리용 필터는 Water Filter라 부르며 생활용수나 공업용수 중에 포함된 이물질이나 유해물질을 걸러내어 깨끗한 물을 얻는 데 사용한다. 해수담수화 등의 전처리 설비에서는 마이크로필터 또는 카트리지 필터로 칭하며, 대량의 물량 여과에 보다 효율적이다.

1) 여과집진기

백 필터는 산업 공정에서 배기 가스에 포함된 먼지를 제거하는 것을 목적으로 하는 먼지 제어 장치로 백필터 안에 걸려 있는 여과포(Filter bag)에 배출가스를 통과시켜 분진을 걸러낸다.
사이클론 수집기에 비해 백 필터의 장점은 서브마이크론 입자를 수집할 수 있으며, 현장에 적합한 필터 매체를 선택하여 온도와 가스의 종류가 다른 다양한 용도에 적용됩니다.

2)헤파필터 (HEPA Filter)

HEPA(High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter 는 공기로부터 미세한 입자를 제거하는 고성능 필터로 Clean Room (무균실)의
공조에 널리 사용사용됨.
의약품, 음료 등 식품공장, 동물실험설비 등의 건물 내를 청결하게 유지할 필요가 있는 공간에서는 건물 내에 발생하는 먼지
등 미세한입자는 신속하게 제거하기 위한 필터로 청정화된 공기를 위에서 불어넣는 공기 유입구 앞에 헤파필터가설치된다.
또한 내부에 오염 물질이 있어 오염된 공기를건물 밖으로 방출되지 않도록 배출구에 헤파필터를 설치하여 입자의유출을
막고필터를통과한 공기는 연소살균시킨다.
